Cotton McKnight: In 23 years of broadcasting I thought I'd seen it all, folks. But it looks like Peter La Fleur has actually blindfolded himself.
Pepper Brooks: He will not be able to see very well, Cotton.
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, opened in 2004, is known as one of the most entertaining movies to ever be released. This movie’s cast is full of recognizable comedic actors; including Justin Long, Ben Stiller, Jason Bateman, and Vince Vaughn.
The movie starts out in a slower fashion in comparison to the rest of the movie. The beginning of the movie presents the context; it gives background on the situation and displays the rivalry between Average Joe’s gym, and Globo gym. This part of the movie puts Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn’s true comedic ability on display. Vince Vaughn’s is very laid back, with many witty jokes, while Ben Stiller is extremely obnoxious, both making the audience laugh hysterically.
Although this movie is great all the way through, what is truly memorable about the film are the announcers of the actual Dodgeball tournament held in Las Vegas. Jason Bateman, playing Pepper Brooks performed some of the most memorable quotes in movie history. Alongside was Cotton McKnight who throughout the entire tournament seemed appalled by Brooks lack of intelligence making the scenes even funnier.
I do not want to release the entire plot to you, but the entire movie is based around the owners of a gym competing in a Dodgeball tournament to save their gym from being bought by Globo gym. Average Joe’s gym (the main character and owner of the gym Vince Vaughn) was losing all of their customers. People were either going to Globo gym, or they just stopped working out all together, and this is a similar situation which Robert Putnam stated was going on in America in Bowling Alone. Putnam stated that the social capital in America was decreasing, and this was being confirmed in the movie.
Dodgeball, although is considered one of the best movies of all time, I believe has not yet received the credit it deserves. This is one of my favorite movies, and hopefully over time will become even more recognizable.
